24 Movie Review

24 Starring Surya,Samantha is an out and out sci fi fantasy film about a watch and time traveling , so if you are looking for logic and reasoning the right moment to forget those would be before entering the cinema hall. Time Traveling as such isn’t a new concept to Tamil audiences , it was successfully executed through the movie ‘Indru Netru Naalai’ released last year.

The story does not take any time to unravel and starts with an absolutely riveting opening sequence which will be remembered for a long time . Surya plays three different roles and he is  sensational in each of them, this man never ceases to amaze and has effortlessly portrayed the role of a scientist , a watchmaker and a devastating villain . As a scientist and a father he has excelled in the opening and the closing sequences of the film, as a watchmaker he looks like a million bucks and hasn’t aged a bit , as Athreya he is absolutely devastating and has delivered one of the best performances in his career. Saranya who plays Surya’s mother in the movie is a huge plus and the sequence when she reveals her background to Surya is one of the scenes of the movie and is sure to get you emotional . Background score is world class and gets the movie moving . Special mention to the VFX team and Cinematographer Tirru, they have done a fantastic job especially with the sequences where Surya the watchmaker unlocks the true potential of the watch .

The director has excelled in his wizardry screenwriting where he manages to pull off twists and turns in every scene, 24 Pays true homage to this dialogue from Christopher Nolan’s Prestige..Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called “The Pledge”. The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course… it probably isn’t. The second act is called “The Turn”. The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you’re looking for the secret… but you won’t find it, because of course you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn’t clap yet. Because making something disappear isn’t enough; you have to bring it back. That’s why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call “The Prestige”. Vikram K Kumar does manage to conjure up a magic in every scene and 24 Is true Prestige to our Kollywood Industry.

On the downside one wonders if the director could have avoided some of the romantic portions between Surya and Samantha which sometimes gets silly and very amateurish .Songs from AR Rahman is not up to the maestro’s standard and we felt that the Mozart of Madras could have done a better job.

Verdict : Surya goes back in time , he is well and truly back to his very best . ’24’ is a landmark film in both Surya and Vikram Kumar’s career . A summer blockbuster for all classes of audience . Go for It! Our SS Music Rating for Suriya’s 24 Movie is 4/5.
